By Sandy Baker Marketing is a fundamental aspect of virtually every business that is out there. For many companies, this is where most of their budget goes: advertising. There are hundreds of ways for you to advertise from coffee shop windows to on the web through banner ads. The goal is of course to target your key audience at the exact right time. This is not an easy task nor is it on that you should take lightly. One of the most intense types of marketing that is geared towards people no matter where they are and where they go is mobile marketing. Consider this. You could pay for one hundred banners to be put on the sides of buses in one major city. This will cost thousands of dollars in marketing. Those who see the ad will be able to react to it. But, in order for them to see it they need to be at the right place at the right time to see the bus go past them. In the end, your target audience is quite difficult to target in this medium. But, when you consider mobile marketing, the tables are turned. What is the one thing that you insure you have when you grab your keys to head out the door? You mobile phone! And, so does about half of the population out there. Marketing through mobile phones is an excellent way to get your message out to individuals who are going to take this medium with them where ever they go. Mobile marketing is fast becoming the talk of the town simply because it is so very effective. Because you can target such a large or such a specific group of people, it makes sense to take advantage of this type of marketing no matter what your product or service is. Because it can be very targeted and very broad, mobile marketing can serve many companies marketing needs: effectively. Sandy Baker is a well respected writer and recommends using mobile marketing strategies, for your marketing needs. If you're serious about expanding your business, these folks are the one you need. Pond Liners - Which One to Use?
By Doug Green There are several kinds of pond liners available in pond stores. The first is EPDM rubber and this is extremely durable, resists punctures and quite flexible. It is normally sold in 40 or 45 mil thickness. If you intend to put a rock bottom on top of your liner, this is the liner for you as it is very flexible and will give and take with freezing. The puncture resistance and flexibility ensure a long life and consistent performance. Usually guaranteed for over 20 years. Polyethylene is the cheapest liner you can buy. But with this lowered cost comes a lowered lifespan. If exposed to sunlight this material may only last one season. It is not puncture resistant and it is quite stiff. The only serious use of this material is if you have a very large pond with a sandy bottom and can bury the edges so the sunlight cant get to it. But if you think you want to build a backyard pond cheaply, using this is truly false economy. Polypropylene is another choice and it comes in the same thickness as EPDM and is equally puncture resistant. The problem comes in the flexibility (about the same as polyethylene which is to say terrible) and this makes it difficult to go around corners. But it is the strongest of the liners. Old swimming pool liners make terrible liners as they tend to degrade quickly in the sunlight and are quite stiff. And what about cheaper materials such as that for roofing. The difference between fish-safe and other material is that the fish safe liners are made with a consistent formula. Other non-fish materials might be OK in this batch but if compound A becomes cheaper next week, it will replace the more expensive compound B. The difficulty is that it doesnt matter for roofing that compound A kills off fish while compound B does not. In fish-safe liners, all material used is consistently fish-safe. But it is possible to obtain a real deal on roof liner material sometimes just be aware that it may or may not be fish safe. Mesothelioma Law Settlements
By Kristy Annely Outcome of asbestos exposure has been established but a number of companies chose to mask these fallouts and expose their workers to its risks. Though mesothelioma was first detected years ago, the first groundbreaking favorable verdict was passed in 1972. After this, Mesothelioma law firms all over America filed numerous litigations and lawsuits for their clients. An effective tool in the hand of mesothelioma lawyers is the option of filing class action lawsuits against defaulting companies. This is a clause that permits a person or persons to take legal action or be sued as the representative of a set of people who have a particular interest. This mass representation has helped strengthen the case of mesothelioma in every respect. Since the condition is usually not diagnosed immediately after asbestos exposure and may take years later to develop, these cases can be complicated. To deal with the problem effectively and acquire a favorable settlement, it is important to hire the services of a specialized mesothilioma law firm or attorney. Accomplished lawyers have the ability to acquire beneficial monetary settlements to recompense Mesothelioma victims. Reputed attorneys take up these settlement claims promptly. This is because most lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This simply means plaintiffs are not required to pay legal bills immediately and are to be paid when plaintiffs receive a settlement. Mesothelioma settlements depend upon representation and actual implication of the disease. Lawyers who represent such settlement cases are skilled professionals who can effectively prove company liability. A settlement is usually a well-bargained deal with inputs from both the plaintiffs and default companies legal representation. The advantage of hiring reputed lawyers in Mesothelioma litigation claims prompt offenders to agree to settlement proposals without prolonged discussions. This is because an unsettled and prolonged litigation can cause company enormous losses. Dusting Off Your Mortgage Marketing
By Jeffrey Nelson More than likely, you have a drawer full of great mortgage marketing ideas. Some of them youve used, some of them you havent had a chance or the budget to use, and some that just have failed miserably. Mortgage marketing doesnt have to be complex, time-consuming, or even expensive. In fact, when you take advantage of some of the great technology tools available, mortgage marketing can be a snap. First, take a good look at your websiteor better yet, take a look at your competitors website. Does your website look exactly the same as your competitors? If you swapped out logos would you be able to differentiate your site from your competitors? In this day and age, your website is likely to be one of your primary marketing methods. Most people turn to the web to do research, if they like what they see, they pursue more. Does your website meet the following guidelines?
Is it easy to navigate? Are visitors to your site guided through simple menus? Can they get to information easily? If it requires more than a two separate mouse clicks to find out what they want, youve lost them and they are on to the next site. How quickly does your site load up? Its great to use graphics, in fact, its a necessity. You need to have something that breaks up mere text on the site, but you also need to make sure the site will pop-up quickly and completely regardless of the users internet access. Think twice about using every trick in the book; animation can seriously slow your site down and make it lose your professional edge. Does your website feature a way to capture client information? You certainly dont want to use any type of invasive cookie software, but you do want to offer your clients a way to get additional information. One of the best ways to do that is to offer an opt-in email service. You provide information or a service that will attract the clients attention, then give them an opportunity to sign up to receive this information. Does your website allow you to export data for your database tools? Your website should allow you to capture the information and use it for additional mortgage marketing tools, so that you can send out specific marketing tools based on the clients area of interest.
Your website is one of your best tools for mortgage marketing. Dont be afraid to invest time and money to make your website dynamic and engaging and set you apart from your competition. The Tribrain and Trauma Therapy
By Jef Gazley When someone experiences a trauma they go into immediate shock. This is very similar to hypnosis. Under hypnosis a person is more suggestible and tends to remember everything that occurred while in that state, even if it is on a subconscious level. Because of this a person, when abused, will remember vividly everything about what it was to feel like a victim and they will also remember everything about what it is like to be an abuser. When an event is traumatic and confusing enough, we tend to internalize it in a futile attempt to control or master it. In some cases a victim will subconsciously embrace the victims role and will tend to be drawn towards abusers and feel sorry for them. Others embrace the abusers role and then act it out on others. Some people do a bit of both. This tendency is the origin of Freuds repetition compulsion. It is a misguided attempt at the concept of mastery. When we cannot master a task we become obsessed with the task until we figure out what we have done wrong and thereby solve the problem. Concept of mastery is one of the major ways that human beings learn. A repetition compulsion however, is simply doing the same thing over and over again. A person who has been abused often feels at fault for the abuse and therefore subconsciously chooses abusers even when consciously trying to pick a kind and healthy person. This is healthy learning gone awry. To understand the dynamics of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder one has to understand how the three brains and the body work. The Cerebrum and Prefrontal Cortex are the human part of the brain and operate by rational thought. This brain is linear and causal and therefore if something is explained to this part of the brain and a person agrees then they will follow those directions voluntarily. It is the conscious part of our brain. This is the part of our brain that traditional psychotherapy or talk therapy is aimed at. The Limbic system is an older part of the brain that is similar to all mammals brains. It is made up mostly of chemicals called Neurotransmitters that help us think and feel, but not necessarily on a logical basis. The third brain is the Medulla Oblongata and is located at the base of the skull. It is a brain which we share with all Reptiles. It deals with instincts and unconscious processes. It is definitely not rational in the way it thinks. All the cells in the body are connected and are capable of body memory and therefore are all minute brains. Candice Pert, the discoverer of Endorphins and the Enkephalin System, postulates that our feelings are in some way yet to be understood, involved with the Enkephalin System that is located in every cell of our body. She believes that this web of endorphins/feelings constitute a highly evolved, yet intricate brain system. In a real sense each cell is composed of a primary primitive brain. Often these brains work quicker than the others that I have mentioned. All the brains, except the Human one, work on the basis of Pavlovs dog or conditioning. If something is repeated enough or is so powerful in its effect that learning gets imprinted it becomes very hard to dislodge it even when situations change. That is why feelings or habits change so slowly after the unconscious thoughts have already changed. Without some kind of intervention to change or block the stimulus/response dynamic, those more primitive brains and the body often will lag 2-5 years behind the Cerebrum and at times will remain active indefinitely. This is why people find it so hard to change and are often confused and frustrated by their inability to do so. This can make people who are quite intelligent unable to fix a problem and they therefore conclude that they must be stupid or lazy. That is not the case. There are three major ways to effect change quicker and less painfully than traditional psychotherapy, which works for the most part only with the human brain. The first technique is Hypnosis. Since people are more sensitive and suggestible under hypnosis this is often an effective way to cut the stimulus/response patterns. A clinician can ask the client to experience the past painful experience with a greater sense of calm or with more effective skills than they had as a child. This alters the experience of the original trauma itself. Hypnosis can be quite beneficial, but does not seem to be as helpful as some of the newer techniques listed below. It appears that the newer models of therapy often produce more congruence and longer lasting change than I have found with hypnosis. It also takes longer and is less versatile. The second way is EMDR, which is an effective and quick way to deal with trauma and is widely practiced. It is a new therapy that is fast and relatively painless. It is based on the theory that REM or rapid eye movements, which occur during dreaming, is the way that our brain shifts short-term memory to long-term memory. Long-term memory doesnt have much emotion or immediacy connected to it. Clients hold the most salient aspect of the trauma in their mind as the therapist moves a couple of fingers of their hand in front of their face to induce rapid eye movements. This seems to recreate the trauma and cause a mini abreaction. After just a few sessions clients usually report remembering the trauma without the emotion. The third and fourth ways are sister therapies, but Neuro Emotional Technique or NET is by far the more sophisticated, versatile, and effective. Neuro Emotional Technique or NET was originally practiced by chiropractors and only later taught to mental health therapists. It is still very difficult to find a counselor proficient in this technique as yet. It is based on Chinese medicine and the Acupuncture and Meridian Systems. It allows a clinician to follow the bodys own present traumas and feelings and discover whether these feelings might be related to past traumas. It then enables a clinician to tap lightly on a few points of the body around the spine and the toxic memory is released. This allows the affected person to be more fully in the present adult mode where effective action and change is easier to initiate. If a persons adult abandonment feelings are complicated by feeling the abandonment they felt when they were 10 years old, a person will be less competent in the present situation. NET releases old and present traumas residing in the body quickly and effectively. TFT, or Thought Field Therapy, which is also based on the Meridian System, is another quick and painless therapy and more clinicians are trained in this technique. It is not as versatile as NET and its diagnostic abilities are limited in my opinion, but it relieves some fears and phobias quite effectively by tapping on various acupressure points. All of these power therapies seem to work to effect change on levels other than the conscious plane. They are often quicker and more effective than traditional forms of therapy. This is because they focus on the more primitive brains, which are not usually reached by older therapy models. I believe fully that insight is important and this is often provided by traditional counseling, but change is not as quick or complete without accessing the more fundamental brains. This is done most efficiently by the newer therapies. 2004 Jef Gazley, M.S., LMFT www.asktheinternettherapist.com www.hypnosistapes4health.com JEF GAZLEY, M.S., LMFT, DCC has practiced psychotherapy for over thirty years and is the owner operator of http://www.asktheinternettherapist.com since 1998 and http://www.hypnosistapes4health.com. Re-Applying Patina To A Stained Glass Panel
By David Gomm 1. Sometimes, a piece of stained glass will lose its original brightness and color that the lead lines once had. Also, mold or oxidation will form on the lead lines occassionally. The blackness or copper of the patina will dull and you find that there is a buildup of pale corrosion around the edges of the lead lines. Now I dont know if these steps apply to leaded windows, but they work well on a copper foiled (Tiffany-Style) panel. 2. Get your favorite cleanser (the kind you're never supposed to use except when revitalizing a window) and a stiff brush. (An old tooth brush will work fine or you can use a household scrub brush.) 3. Apply a light coating of cleanser. 4. Add a small amount of water and scrub the lead lines. Make sure to scrub each direction to remove any corrosion that has formed around the lead lines. 5. After both sides of the panel have been cleaned, rinse the cleanser off and dry the panel well. It's easy to rinse off in the sink or with a garden hose. If water is not easily available, get a bucket or pan of water and use rags to rinse off the window. 6. Next you'll need your blacl or copper patina and a rag that you don't care about. You need it to be cloth, paper towels disintegrate and even rags get eaten away by the chemicals in patina. We always discard a rag that has been used with patina because it will decompose after a day of patina exposeure. 7. Apply the patina liberally. If you only put a little on, the chemical reaction doesn't work right. Black patina will try to go copper and copper patina will try to go black. Sometimes crystals form on the edge of the bottle of patina. They form after the chemical has been sitting, so always shake the bottle before applying patina. Take your rag and apply a liberal coat of patina. Don't be afraid to use a lot. You'll have better success with more of the chemical. Wash and dry the window thoroughly. Leaving patina on the glass can cause it to discolor. Finally, the panel is the completed. For additional steps, Review our article on "Studio Chemicals at www.betterstainedglass.com You can view the pictures that go with this article if you go to http://www.betterstainedglass.com/Newsletter /Archives/2006May-reapply/reapplypatina.htm David Gomm started building stained glass windows professionally back in 1983 and has become an expert at many aspects of stained glass building, design and repair. The Importance of an Elevator Statement
By Neil Sagebiel Please, God, dont let me follow the police officer. It was career day at Floyd Elementary School and I visited my daughters kindergarten class to explain what I do for a living. It was my Dick Van Dyke moment. For those of you who are relatively young or havent seen reruns of the Dick Van Dyke Show, theres an episode in which Rob Petrie (played by Van Dyke) visits his sons class to talk about his occupation as a TV comedy writer. Petries son and the class are less than thrilled. How did it go for me? Fortunately, I didnt follow the police officer. He passed around handcuffs and a flashlight. I passed around an ad board. Lame, I know. But whats an advertising copywriter to do? Trying to tell kindergartners what I do in a few minutes reminded me of the importance of an elevator statement. An elevator statement is a concise, clear description of a company, organization, product, or service. The idea is that if someone in an elevator asked you what your company does, you can deliver a memorable answer in the time it takes to travel a couple of floors. While some people think its a pitch, I consider it a short statement or even a one-liner. One public relations firm calls it the shortest possible explanation of what a company does. An elevator statement is not a tagline or slogan. Nor is it a positioning, vision, or mission statement. It can be rehearsed but should sound conversational. Following are two examples of a simple elevator statement structure. I provide copywriting and creative services to companies and ad agencies. Acme Worldwide manufactures heavy duty widgets for the construction equipment industry. If after saying your elevator statement prospects want to know more, be sure to get their business card before they step out of your life. Give them your business card, too. But without theirs you cant follow up. Copyright (c) 2007 Neil Sagebiel Neil Sagebiel is a former senior copywriter for a Seattle B2B ad agency. Headaches Can Be So Depressing
By David Wilding People with headaches, which respond to over-the-counter medication very rarely visit their doctor. But if the headache is
happening every day
is there when the person wakes up in the morning
hangs on for most of the day
has been a problem for many months
then the doctors alarm bells should ring. This type of headache is classic in patients who tend towards depression. Depressed people often present to the doctor with a continuous headache, for which no reason can be found. The person often feels that the real symptoms of the headache are more acceptable than feeling depressed or low. The stigma of being depressed has lessened hugely over the last 20 years but many people still find it hard to admit that they cant cope. Doctors are taught that the classically depressed person moves slowly, looks sad, speaks slowly in a flat voice and shows little interest. This can be true but is not always the case. Many people feel ashamed of feeling depressed. They eventually recognize that they need medical help but when finally facing their doctor, they often put on a bright face and minimise their suffering when describing how they feel. The presence of prolonged headaches is a clue though, along with
Disturbed sleep either not enough or too much
Waking early
Loss of appetite or overeating
Smoking and drinking to excess
A decrease in previously enjoyed leisure pursuits
A decrease in sexual desire and activity
The type of headache that depressed people complain of is a tension-type headache, predominantly caused by muscle contraction. The patient is tense (sometimes without even realizing it) and the muscles of the neck, jaw and scalp tighten up. If this contraction of the muscles is kept up for any length of time, it may cause tiny blood vessels to break in the affected areas. This affects the blood flow and can cause a severe headache and pain. Do I have a headache because Im depressed or am I depressed because I have a headache? It is recognized that people with depression develop bodily symptoms. The doctor should know that although the headache is occurring as a symptom of depression, the pain is real. The doctor should take a careful history as depression headaches have a distinctive pattern. They usually occur in the early evening or early hours of the morning. The pain is described as a tight band of pressure, like a vice, around the head. The person may claim that they have suffered from these headaches for months or even years. Pain killing medication rarely works in these cases. The treatment should be aimed at the underlying cause the depression itself. Antidepressants can be very helpful and biofeedback has shown some positive results. The flip side of this is that people who are suffering chronic pain often develop depression as a result. In these cases, the physical side of the problem is usually given priority and too little attention is paid to the emotional aspect of all this suffering. The headaches suffered by these people are the same as previously described. These distressing headaches can be helped but it takes time, co-operation and complete honesty on the part of the sufferer. More important information on tension headaches can be found on http://Headache.HealthHows.com a resource rich site with tips and ideas for combating all types of headaches and their causes. Understanding the Social Risks of Online Dating
By Claire Brent Millions of people meet their matches online each year. In fact, online dating has become so popular in the past five years that there has been a large influx in the number of online dating Web sites, forums and chat rooms. In general, people look online for love for a variety of reasons, including ease, abundance of singles and connectivity. Online dating once had a stigma to it. It was believed that if someone had to look online for a date, that he or she simply had social skills that were lacking or that he or she had something to hide. In reality, online dating is incredibly popular these days because it has become so easy. Many online dating sites also tout the benefits of usage by using success rates of happy marriages that were born from connections on their sites. If you are considering online dating in your future, it is important that you recognize some of the social stigmas that may (or may not) actually exist. For one, while many very happy and successful people turn to the Internet to help them find true love, people who have not met online may have an opinion that online dating is for people who lack adequate social skills. If you feel that you lack social skills and, therefore, need the Internet to join you with a partner, then by all means, experiment. You may even be pleasantly surprised to find that there are many other people your age who share interests and successes. In fact, you may even run into a few people that you know offline. Additionally, when looking for love online, keep in mind that you may have to admit to all of your future boyfriends or girlfriends that your ex is someone that you met online. Your newest love may ask you why you were dating someone online. Desperate is often a term that comes to mind for many people when others learn of their online relationships. No matter what your opinion on online dating is, you will have to be comfortable and confident with telling people that you met your significant other (or maybe even spouse) through the use of the Internet. As if being called desperate isnt enough for your reputation, dating online has yet another negative stigma to it. Whether its true or not is up for debate in many social circles, but there is a large segment of the population that still believes that online dating is for people who are looking for fast and fancy hook-ups; not for lasting love. Therefore, you may have to contend with people who contact you online looking for the fast hook-up. Be firm with them unless you do want the hook-up. Also, keep in mind that people that you then meet offline may also believe that you were online looking for that quick encounter. When dating online, you must be sure of yourself and confident with your decisions. Dating online is a wonderful way to be introduced to a large number of people in a short amount of time. However, there are several social stigmas that are associated with the medium. In order to move beyond those stigmas, it may take some hard work convincing your friends and family that your online relationship is legitimate. Nevertheless, if at first you dont succeed online try, try again anyway! You just might find love at the end of all of your efforts. Lost in the jungle of online dating? Scary Halloween Crafts
By Angela Maroevich Looking for some great Halloween crafts for your Halloween party, haunted house, or just for trick-or-treaters? A fun craft is something that can keep you occupied for hours on end especially if you enjoy it. Here are some ideas that will hopefully set you on your way in preparation for your next Halloween... Halloween Crafts Part 1: If you live in a house that has a wood-burning fireplace, then chances are that you have access to tree stumps or large blocks of wood. These are great for making stands for your Jack O'Lanterns. You could use a chisel to slightly hollow out the middle of the stump so that the lantern can sit stably or simply use some Blu-Tack or Velcro. Get some small or mini pumpkins and hollow them out to use as candle holders. If open flames are out of the question, you can put glow sticks instead of candles for a different effect. You can carve, draw or paint faces on the pumpkins too. Instead of pumpkins, you could use apples as well. Ensure that you choose apples that sit well and flat or cut off the bottom to make a flat surface. Remove the stem and cut around it deep enough for the candle. It is best to use taper candles for a better fit. Get a large pumpkin and hollow it out to use as a salad bowl or to serve fresh vegetables. Cut off the top, hollow and clean it out and let it dry in the sun. You could carve a jagged edge design on the top. Do the same with some smaller or mini pumpkins to use for dips or salad dressings. Make a scarecrow in your front yard. You need two pieces of wood, one put into the ground and the other nailed across for the arms. Use old jeans and a shirt and stuff them with newspaper. Add some straw for effect. You can use a plastic pumpkin for the head and draw a face on it. This makes a great Halloween craft for the whole family. Tie glow sticks to helium balloons and let them float around the house. Ensure that some string extends below so that people can easily reach them if they get stuck somewhere or simply to play with them. Use publicly available Halloween fonts on your computer to make banners or invitations for your party. It's a fast, easy Halloween craft you can use instantly to enhance your party theme. Print them onto inkjet iron-on transfer paper and put them onto your favourite t-shirt or Halloween outfit. Halloween Crafts Part 2. OK, Now We Are Getting Scary... A visit to your local hardware store for some basic items and you could make your own tombstones transforming your garden into an instant graveyard. Paint them grey to resemble stone. Do not worry about the details as it will be dark, but do put on some exciting or scary wordings. By the way, your local hardware store is loaded with Halloween craft ideas. Going trick or treating? Why not make a special jug to collect candies? Cut off the top two inches of a gallon milk jug. Soak to remove any labels. Paint orange. Once dry, paint or stick on eyes nose and mouth resembling a Jack O'Lantern. Use fluorescent paint for a nice effect. The jug can be kept for future reuse. Using six pipe cleaners, you can make your own skeleton. Bend one pipe cleaner into two for the backbone. Twist another around the bottom of the backbone to make into the legs. Do the same for the arms. Join two pipe cleaners and twist them around the backbone leaving some space forming a ribcage. Twist the last pipe cleaner for a head and glue on some eyes. Hang with a rubber band for a bouncing effect. Your kids will love making halloween crafts with pipe cleaners. But be careful when cutting and keep them out of their mouth. Using glue and food coloring, you can make a see through painting. Paint a Halloween image onto a piece of plastic wrap. Before the mixture dries, put another piece of plastic wrap on. Cut it out and hang it in front of a light source for a see through effect. You could also frame the plastic pictures using wood or cardboard if you want them to be longer lasting. Halloween Crafts Part 3. The Real Scary Stuff... Make some hand printed spiders. Apply black paint to your palm and 4 fingers leaving out the thumb. Place palm onto a piece of paper. Turn the paper 180 degrees and print again making sure the palm overlaps. Add some wiggly eyes using either paint or sticks. This is suitable for even 2 or 3 year olds. Make your own blood. It is less expensive than buying ready made blood from the Halloween shops. It's not difficult; all you need is Karo syrup and food coloring. While you're at it, why not make some slime using glue, water and borax powder. This is an advanced Hallween craft, so take your time and be careful. Using apples, you can make dried, shrunken heads. Peel the apples and coat with a mixture of lemon juice and salt to prevent browning. Carve out a face of eyes, nose and mouth. Do not worry about the finer details as they will probably be lost when the apple dries. You can use whole cloves for the eyes and rice grains for the teeth. Let the apples sit out in a warm place for about 2 weeks. If you don't have 2 weeks, you can speed up the drying by putting them into an oven on the lowest temperature for about 45 minutes and then to dry out naturally for the next 2 days or so. Once dried, they shrink and deform into weird and scary looking faces. Says Angie Maroevich, "You don't have to spend a fortune on commercial Halloween supplies to have a great party. There are many inexpensive alternatives laying around the house or at your local store you can use to create a Halloween theme that will impress all your friends."
