N.C. Law Declares Open Season on Deadbeat Parents

By Alison Kramer Raleigh, NC-Rosen Law Firm advises its clients against a law that could affect their hobbies and careers. Non-custodial parents who havent been keeping up with their child support payments could find their ability to hunt curtailed under a state law aimed at penalizing deadbeat parents. The law G.S. 50-13.12, which is a decade old, says a judge can revoke a persons hunting license if that person fails to pay child support. Judges can also revoke other privileges including driving and professional licenses. The statute says that the forfeiture of licensing privileges may be taken for failure to pay child support or failure to comply with subpoena pursuant to child support of paternity establishment proceedings. The question is whether revoking licenses is a good incentive for parents to keep up with child support payments. For a lot of people in North Carolina, hunting is a popular pastime, says Lee Rosen, a board certified family law specialist and president of Rosen Law Firm. Telling a parent they have to pay support sometimes isnt enoughyou need to threaten them that if they dont their life will be less because of it. So the day after Thanksgiving, when hunting season begins in earnest, thousands of North Carolinians head out in search for an 8-point buck. For those with child support obligations, they
need to make sure theyve paid their dues. Rosen has been practicing divorce law in North Carolina for more than twenty years. Before this law was established, getting deadbeat parents to pay up was like getting a 10-year-old to clean up their room, says Rosen.
